BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)

An oil-soluble exfoliating acid — salicylic acid is the main one — that can work inside pores to help clear congestion.

Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are a small group of exfoliating acids best known for one member: salicylic acid. What sets BHAs apart from AHAs is that they are oil-soluble, which means they can work not just on the surface but also inside the pore, where they help loosen the mix of oil and dead skin cells that leads to congestion.

Because of this oil-loving quality, BHAs are often chosen for skin that leans oily or congestion-prone, or for blackheads, whiteheads, and textural bumps. You'll find salicylic acid in cleansers, toners, serums, and spot treatments, typically at gentle over-the-counter strengths. Even lower concentrations can be effective in a well-formulated leave-on product that stays on the skin long enough to work.

BHAs pair well with hydrating, barrier-supportive ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Introduce them gradually, and be cautious about layering them with other strong actives like retinoids or AHAs while your skin adjusts. Because exfoliating acids can leave skin more sensitive to the sun, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

Honest limits: BHAs can be drying for naturally dry or reactive skin, and they won't resolve every kind of breakout on their own. If you have a known aspirin or salicylate allergy, or you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with a professional before using BHA products. And if congestion or breakouts persist despite consistent, gentle care, a skincare professional can help you find the right approach.
