Azelaic Acid

A naturally occurring acid that helps visibly even skin tone, ease congestion and calm the appearance of redness.

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid found naturally in grains like wheat and barley. In skincare, it's valued for its ability to influence several skin pathways at once: it helps inhibit tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in melanin production), supports a clearer-looking complexion by helping to normalise the way skin cells shed inside pores, and has calming properties that can reduce the appearance of redness.

You'll find azelaic acid in over-the-counter formulations typically ranging from 10% to 20%, delivered in creams, gels or serums. Higher concentrations (above 15–20%) are generally available through prescribing professionals. The ingredient is well tolerated across most skin types, including those prone to sensitivity, partly because it doesn't increase photosensitivity the way some other actives can. That said, sunscreen remains a smart daily companion for any routine focused on evening out skin tone.

Azelaic acid pairs well with niacinamide for additional support with uneven tone and congestion, and it can sit comfortably alongside gentle hydrators like hyaluronic acid. If you're already using other exfoliating actives (AHAs, BHAs, retinoids), introduce azelaic acid slowly to let your skin adjust. Starting with every other evening and building up is a gentle approach that tends to work well.

Be honest with your expectations: azelaic acid works gradually, and visible changes in tone or texture typically take several weeks of consistent use. It is not a replacement for professional assessment if you're dealing with persistent or worsening skin concerns. If your skin isn't responding after a reasonable trial, or if redness and congestion are significantly affecting your comfort, consider speaking to a skincare professional for tailored guidance.
