Ascorbic Acid

The pure, water-soluble form of vitamin C used in skincare to support antioxidant defence and brighten skin tone.

Ascorbic acid is L-ascorbic acid, the most studied and bioavailable form of vitamin C used in topical skincare. It belongs to the antioxidant class of actives and is naturally found in skin, where it plays a role in neutralising free radicals generated by UV exposure and pollution. Because the body cannot produce it internally, topical application is one way to support the skin's existing antioxidant reserves.

In formulations, ascorbic acid is notoriously fussy. It works best at a low pH (roughly 2.5–3.5) and is typically effective in concentrations between 10% and 20%. Higher percentages don't necessarily mean better outcomes and can increase the chance of irritation. The ingredient is unstable when exposed to light, air, and water over time, which is why you'll often see it packaged in opaque, airless containers. Some formulations combine it with vitamin E (tocopherol) and ferulic acid, a combination that research suggests enhances its stability and antioxidant activity.

For shoppers, ascorbic acid is worth considering if you're looking to support a more even-looking skin tone, address dullness, or add an antioxidant layer under your sunscreen. It pairs well with SPF in the morning and with hyaluronic acid for hydration. Vitamin C and niacinamide were once thought to clash, but for normal modern formulations this is considered a myth — they layer together comfortably. Introduce it gently, starting with lower concentrations if your skin tends towards sensitivity.

Honest caveats: ascorbic acid is not a substitute for sun protection, and it won't reverse significant sun damage on its own. Results take consistent use over weeks, not days. If you have very reactive skin or a condition like rosacea, consider speaking to a skincare professional before adding a potent vitamin C serum to your routine. Also, once a product has turned dark brown or orange, its efficacy has likely diminished significantly, so shelf life genuinely matters with this one.
