Should I Change My Skincare Routine in Winter?

So much changes in winter! Our eating habits change, our exercise habits change and we spend a lot of time indoors in heating, where the humidity levels are low which changes what happens to our skin.

The protective layer that sits on the surface of our skin is made up of oil and sweat.

However, in winter we produce less of this so our skin can become vulnerable. The skin can become flaky, sensitive and dehydrated.

So winter is the time to rethink your skincare and make a few changes to help keep the skin functioning correctly.

Cleansing

Depending on your skin type, you might like to change from a foaming cleanser to a milky cleanser, or alternate between both to add some moisture and care for the skin by not stripping away those natural oils.

Here are my two top cleansers to help combat those winter skin woes!

Sold out

A velvety cleanser, infused with natural shea butter and plant saponins to effortlessly sweep away make-up and impurities for a refreshed complexion. Skin feels renewed and deeply cleansed as natural glycerin nourishes and hydrates to reveal visibly healthy and soft skin.

Sold out

Gentle Clean is ideal for post procedure when the skin is extremely sensitive and cannot tolerate exfoliation. This gentle gel cleanser with Canadian Willowherb mildly cleanses the skin as well as effectively removing makeup. Leaving the skin feeling calm, clean and fresh.

Exfoliation

It is still important to exfoliate in winter. However, try easing off a little and swapping from a physical exfoliant to either enzymatic or a chemical exfoliant, such as a lactic based product.

Lactic acid is perfect in winter as it hydrates and exfoliates.

Enzymes are perfect if you have a more sensitised skin as it very gentle removes the dead skin cells by dissolving them.

Here are my top two gentle exfoliators that are perfect for winter!

Sold out

Potent antioxidant-rich exfoliation mask, carefully formulated to gently eliminate dead skin build-up without irritation or harm revealing a hydrated, brighter, smooth complexion.

Sold out

This maximum-strength exfoliant delivers powerful results with no downtime using a unique complex of phytoactive AHA extracts, Lactic Acid and fermented plant enzymes to help reveal new, firmer skin.

Serums

Add a hydrating serum to your routine in winter - no matter what your skin type is!

Hyaluronic acid is the ingredient to look for! It will help replace lost moisture in all skin types to keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

Oily skin types particularly, can quickly become dehydrated in winter and when using harsher type products. So especially if you have Oily Skin, add a hydrating serum in winter is a must!

My Top #2 Hydrating Serums:

Sold out

Hydrating fluid concentrate relieves dryness and the appearance of fine lines. Use prior to, or mix with, your moisturiser to help lift moisture levels. May also be applied directly to dry areas.

Sold out

Deeper hydration, smoothing and fine line reduction with the addition of hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid.

Proprietary blend HA-Pro Complex™ encourages the skin to create its own hyaluronic acid, resulting in long-term anti-ageing and hydration.

Moisturiser

Step up your moisturiser for winter.

Cold weather, harsh winds, and dry indoor air can really dry out your skin, causing it to become flaky, dry, and lifeless.

Due to these harsh conditions, the skin needs more lipids to help keep that protective layer on the surface and prevent moisture from escaping.

Consider using a moisturiser that's richer in winter. Swap out your light textured moisturiser for something a little richer, thicker, and more emollient.

My Top #2 Moisturisers for Winter:

Sold out

The key to Phytostat 9's remarkable performance lies in the synergistic blend of Chro-Noline, a high technology patented amino-peptide along with a clinically validated mix of skin-saving antioxidants and nurturing lipids including pure organic seas buckhorn, chirally correct multi-spectrum tocopherols, macadamia, almond and sunflower - all expertly blended in this luxurious paraben and fragrance-free cream so it's gentle enough even for the most temperamental of skins.

Sold out

This feather-light formula, rich in Evening Primrose Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Shea Butter hydrates from within, infusing the skin with moisture and locking down the skin’s natural moisture barrier to prevent essential hydration from escaping, while noticeably improving skin elasticity, tone and texture.

Sun Protection Factor

YES, you still need to apply SPF every day in winter.

This not only protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays, but it also protects the skin from pollution, dirt, and free radical damage which causes premature ageing in the skin.

My Top Sunscreen Picks:

Sold out

A sheer, mattifying moisturiser that spreads easily and evenly for a shine-free finish. The soft matte texture makes it ideal for daily use and preps the skin for an all-day glow. I love the feeling of this as it sinks into the skin seamlessly and leaves no residue on the surface.

Sold out

Melan nourishing antiaging oil combines UVB+UVA with biological filters for dry and mature skin types. Helping to prevent the visible signs of premature ageing, its oil-gel texture melts onto the skin to leave a dry finish. Chia seed oil provides elasticity and nutrition, while strengthening the skin's barrier function.
