How to Layer Your Skincare

With skincare now at a high level of sophistication and with numerous steps in a regime, it does get confusing as to what we need to apply and when.

Today I'm going to take out the guess work for you and explain how to layer your skincare - so you are getting the most out of every product you are using!

#1 Cleanser

Cleansing is always the first step in a skincare regime.

If you get this step right, all the other products that follow will work far more effectively and your results will come faster and better!

You might be wondering, "But when am I meant to cleanse my skin?". The answer is simple: every morning and night.

Why cleansing in the morning:

Every morning, there is a whole lot of dead skin dust and dirt that builds up on our bedding and pillows, and that's why you need to wash that off of your face every morning.

Why cleansing at night?

Well, let's start with, at night it is really important to double cleanse (cleanse your skin twice).

The reason for this is that we have the whole days build-up of dirt, pollution, sweat, oil, and makeup on the skin.

The first cleanse is only going to remove that layer, the second cleanse is what will effectively clean the skin and have it ready for the next step in your routine - the all-important correcting steps.

#2 Exfoliant

Exfoliating is only going to be done between 1-3 times per week, depending on your skin type.

This step can be done either in the morning or at night.

I personally prefer to do this at night as I like the fact the serums that I use at night will penetrate better post-exfoliation.

All skins need to exfoliate. But make sure you choose the correct exfoliant for your skin type and concern, otherwise you might end up over-exfoliating or causing damage to your skin!

#3 Toner

Toning s is done immediately after cleansing. If you also exfoliated, you would use your toner after that.

Toners have come a long way and are amazing for hydration. Moreover, it has been established that serums will penetrate better when the skin is slightly moist.

Toners offer numerous benefits, they can calm your skin, visibly reduce pores, and keep your skin fresh and hydrated.

Using a toner after cleansing helps set the stage for the rest of your skincare routine.

#4 Serums

Ok, so this is where it can get confusing! If you are using more than one serum, it is hard to know what to apply first.

We often get asked by clients how should they layer their serums.

The easiest way to remember is to always apply lighter/water-based serums first.

Wait for it to be absorbed, then go ahead and apply your heavier creamy/oil-based serums next.

Let them start to work their magic and you're ready for your next step!

#5 Eye Cream

Now it's time to apply your eye cream, which also allows the serums to penetrate further while you do it.

Gently tap around the whole area working from the outside inwards and up around the brow bone.

#6 Moisturiser

Your moisturiser will lock in all these amazing ingredients you have applied to your skin with your serums and eye cream.

It will hydrate and form a barrier over the skin to keep it protected and prevent environmental stressors attacking our skin cells.

Always make sure your Moisturiser has been prescribed for your skin type and concern.

This way you will get a perfect balance, and avoid getting a whole new skin concern due to using the incorrect product for you.

#6 SPF

It's no surprise that this is the number one anti-ageing product that you can apply to the skin.

Prevention is key, and this is essential to keep the skin protected from the harsh damage of UVA & UVB rays. Every day, every season.

This step is going to prevent a multitude of problems e.g. pigmentation, premature ageing, dullness, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and ultimately, skin cancer.

This is an absolute no brainer when it comes to a skincare regime.
