I Love Clay Masks But Are They Actually Good For My Skin?

Who doesn't love a good clay mask? A mask that makes your skin feel fresh, smooth, clean, and tight?

But are clay masks for everyone?

With any skincare product, it is always recommended to receive a thorough skin consultation by a professional Skin Therapist to make sure any skin product is suited and tailored to your skin concern and type.

My mum loves her clay mask, and I always say to her "Why do you put on this charcoal clay mask, when you know this mask isn't suited for your skin?"

Her response - "I love how it makes my skin feel squeaky clean and fresh"

If any Skin Therapists are reading this, they will understand hearing the words "squeaky clean" makes our alarm bells instantly go off!

The truth is, there is no product that is actually meant to make your skin feel "squeaky clean".

If your clay mask is making your skin feel like that, it means your skin type or concern is not suited for that particular mask (or even a cleanser or exfoliant you've been using).

What are clay masks?

Clay masks are designed to absorb and detoxify excess oil and impurities from our pores to help prevent skin concerns like acne, blackheads, blemishes, and the enclose of large pores.

This is why clay masks are popular among oily and acne-prone skin types. When applying a clay mask, it will dry on the skin and soak up those oils that are clogging your pores.

Should I use a clay mask?

Ok, so are clay masks bad for my skin?

Clay masks are not bad. But they are designed for oily skin types who can benefit from a clay mask.

However, if you put a clay mask on a dry skin type that already lacks oil, then the clay mask is going to absorb all their good natural oil, leading to further dehydration and a weakened barrier function.

That's why I always shake my head to my mum using a clay mask - she has a dry skin type, is dehydrated, and is concerned with ageing. In short, a clay mask is just not suited for her skin and it would cause more harm than actual benefits.

What are the ingredients in clay masks?

The most popular clays in clay masks are Betonite, kaolin, and charcoal.

These clays give the masks their absorbing properties.

How long should I leave my clay mask on?

As clay masks are absorbing impurities and soaking up excess oil, you only need to keep the mask on for 10-15 minutes.

Leaving on longer can result in having the clay mask drying out your skin.

Will a clay mask help with my pore size?

Your pores are part of your genetic makeup, you can not change your pore size, same as you can not change your skin type.

The clays used in clay masks however, are absorbent, which can contribute to a more visibly smooth skin which will make the appearance of your pores smaller.

How many times a week should I apply my clay mask?

Clay masks are very absorbent so you do not want to absorb all your natural oil.

We recommend you use your clay mask two times per week (depending on the severity of your oil flow and skin condition).
