Have you ever noticed how your skin changes through different seasons? I definitely have! My skin can go from being extremely dry in winter to more of an "oily t-zone" during summer. That's why I always adapt my skincare routine to the time of the year and how my skin reacts to it.
What exactly summer does to our skin?
The humidity and heat of summer affect your skin and body in many ways. They cause water loss from the body (leading to dehydration), which can be seen on the skin too. They make our oil glands more active, which means you may end up with more sebum around the t-zone than you are used to. This increased oil flow in addition to the constant application of sun protection can lead to breakouts, since the skin can become easily congested.
In short, summer can be unforgiving to our skin, to not mention what we put our skin through ourselves - sun baking, tanning, sunburns, excessive sun exposure, heat, air conditioning, alcohol, lifestyle, and pollution.
So not only make sure to hydrate your skin and keep adequate water intake, but also re-evaluate your skincare routine to address this change in conditions.
Here are my summer tips to keep your skin hydrated and have that summer glow throughout the best season of the year!
Hydration is the key
Besides drinking plenty of water to keep your body and skin hydrated and flush out toxins, there are also essential Hyaluronic Acid serums you can add to your skincare routine to help retain moisture in the skin.
Plump and firm skin through increased hydration with this advanced hyaluronic acid formulation. This smoothing blend provides deep, long-lasting hydration on three levels: on the surface, deeper in the skin and by increasing the skin’s own hyaluronic acid production.
Concentrated treatment with hyaluronic acid that provides the skin with a moisturising, anti-ageing, repulping and filling action.
Change your Cleanser
Consider changing your facial cleanser. During the summer season, your skin might produce more sebum, so if you already have an oily skin choose a foaming cleanser with Salicylic Acid in it to help unclog pores, and prevent breakouts. If you have dry skin, choose a foaming cleanser with Lactic Acid or AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) to brighten the skin and help with the increased oil flow on the t-zone.
For oily skins: Lather away dirt, makeup and impurities with this gentle Salicylic Acid foaming cleanser that reveals a cleaner, healthier looking complexion without stripping skin of its natural oils.
For dry skins: ASAP daily facial cleanser is an oil free formulation that gently cleanses skin of make-up and impurities. Contains AHA’s to loosen and remove dead skin cells, leaving skin refreshingly clean and smooth.
Sunscreen is A MUST!
Living in Australia, it is VITAL to apply sunscreen every single day (and re-apply it every two hours!)
Wearing sunscreen is a prevention, not only for the face but also for the body. Excessive UVA and UVB exposure causes permanent sun damage to the skin, which can be seen in the form of wrinkles, loss of elastin, and hyperpigmentation.
The ultimate nourishment for skin in need of support against the ageing and damaging effects of UV exposure. Suitable for all skin types especially those concerned with ageing and pigmentation.
Melan nourishing antiaging oil combines UVB+UVA with biological filters for dry and mature skin types. Helping to prevent the visible signs of premature ageing, its oil-gel texture melts onto the skin to leave a dry finish. Chia seed oil provides elasticity and nutrition, while strengthening the skin's barrier function
Exfoliate your skin
Your skin works hard to still be healthy through the humidity of summer. Exfoliating will help slough off the dead skin cells and make sure that oil, dirt, toxins, and all the sun protection you applied doesn't clog the skin. To not mention exfoliating helps brighten the skin too!
A triple-action exfoliant that combines Ecoscrub, enzymes and AHA’s to gently polish, removing lifeless cells. Skin is left feeling instantly smoother and more radiant.
Societe Superfruit Enzyme Exfoliator gently lifts and exfoliates dead skin cells. Superfruits (Mangosteen, Gogi, Noni, and Cranberry) and a special enzyme blend make skin smoother, softer and calmer in minutes.
Antioxidants + Serums
Invest in good quality serums. Antioxidant ingredients such as Vitamin C are essential to help prevent free radical damage from excessive sun exposure and stimulate collagen production.
Vitamin B3 helps to improve the surface of your skin structure, prevent water loss and retain skin's moisture.
A serum for all skin types that softens the appearance of fine lines and fights environmental damage with multiple forms of stable vitamin C to brighten and fight the visible signs of dullness and ageing to create a healthy, youthful glow.
Change your Moisturiser
Although in summer we tend to be more active and be outdoors more often, your skin still needs to be protected with a moisturiser to help with moisture loss and to protect the skin's barrier - its first layer of defence. So changing your moisturiser from winter - which could be a rich nourishment cream - to a summer light-weight lotion is very important.
Cosmedix Skin Thirst is a ultra-hydrating lightweight moisturiser, formulated to boost the skins hydration levels, whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pores on the skin.
Calm Water Gel is a perfect weightless water-gel moisturiser that hydrates dry, sensitive skin. Refreshing gel formula transforms into a skin-quenching fluid upon application, forming a weightless barrier against environmental assault. The skin is left feeling calm & hydrated!
Look after your eye area
The eye area is where we first notice the signs of premature skin ageing. The area around your eyes is more delicate than the rest of your face, that is why it needs adequate skincare targeted at that area. Using your eye muscle contractions thousands of times per day, plus the effects of sun exposure, lead to the formation of wrinkles and loss of elastin. Using an eye cream with an SPF during the day will prevent this (while also wearing sunglasses!).
The skin around our eyes is incredibly delicate, which is why it can often be the first area to show signs of ageing. Advanced Day Eye Protect is an all-encompassing anti-ageing eye cream designed to nourish and hydrate while combatting environmental causes of skin ageing.
Specifically developed with Orange Plant Stem Cells and Hyaluronic Acid Filling Spheres, C Infusion Eye Cream deeply hydrates and rejuvenates the skin like Retinol. The revitalising effects reduce the appearance of dark circles and energise the delicate eye area.
Less Is More - Go Natural
Summer is the perfect time to let your skin breathe. Wearing a heavy foundation through summer with the high humidity levels does not allow your skin to breathe. Alternatively. there are amazing treatment foundations or tinted moisturisers that you can switch to.
Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation is a breakthrough foundation formulated to help heal and camouflage damaged skin.
