Dry Vs Dehydrated Skin

At this time of the year, it is reasonable to be wondering "Is my skin dry?"
With less humidity in the air, we can sometimes confuse dehydration and dryness. So let's take a look at the difference between these two skin concerns.

What is the difference?

Dry skin is a skin type (this is what we are born with) and is from a lack of oil and will be dry all year round not just seasonally. When you have a true dry skin type, you have minimal or no oil production in the skin.

Dehydrated skin is from a lack of moisture (water) and is from external factors such as sun, harsh products or treatments, hot showers, ageing and seasonal changes. All these factors can contribute to dehydrated skin.

When your skin is feeling dehydrated, you get a feeling of tightness, and you can also experience sensitivity. That feeling of wanting to put more moisturiser on during the day, even oily skin can have dehydration. Which can lead to more breakouts as the skin starts producing more oil to combat the dehydration.

What can we do to help?

To treat dry skin, we need to add oil, such as nourishing creams & serums, which include plenty of antioxidants, vitamins, and plant oils.

To treat dehydrated skin, we need to add moisture. We can also make some lifestyle adjustments that will help with dehydration. (the following will also apply to dry skin)

  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Avoid overconsumption of alcohol.
  3. Avoid hot showers.
  4. Avoid sun exposure.
  5. Use a good quality homecare regime which is prescribed for your skin type.

Let's look at some products to treat dehydration in various skin types that will help with dehydration.
