Bakuchiol - The Retinol Alternative and How it Works

Bakuchiol, what a fancy name for a skin ingredient! Let's get started on how to even pronounce that:
It is pronounced Buh-Koo-chee-all!

Bakuchiol has become a savvy ingredient in the skincare industry. I feel Bakuchiol has become widely known for being an all-natural anti-ageing ingredient and as people look further and further for plant-based ingredients, it is becoming more popular.

So what is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a natural, plant-based, vegan ingredient, found in the leaves and seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. Bakuchiol is used as an alternative to retinol.

What are the benefits of Bakuchiol?

  • Safe for all skin types, even the most sensitive
  • Safe for pregnant and breastfeeding ladies
  • It is photostable, which means it does not make our skin photosensitive to UV rays
  • Bakuchiol can be applied both morning and night (whereas Retinol can only be applied at night)
  • Great alternative for those people who react to retinol
  • Delivers the benefits of reducing and preventing ageing, but in a natural ingredient
  • Bakuchiol is vegan

Why would I use Bakuchiol over Retinol?

Retinol is a cosmeceutical ingredient, meaning it will make more change within your skin than Bakuchiol.

However, if you are vegan, only want to use all-natural ingredients or have a sensitivity to retinol, then I would recommend you use bakuchiol.

When should I start using Bakuchiol?

There is no specific rule for when exactly someone should start using Bakuchiol, but my recommendation would be your early to mid 20s. That's the age elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid start declining in our skin by 2% each year.
