ACID sounds SCARY, right? Scary Images come to mind. You’re probably thinking that this is not a great idea right? Well, think again! When used at the right concentration acids are the most beneficial ingredients available in skincare. They are the heroes in the fight against pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne, dry skin, and uneven skin texture and tone. There is acid for every skin type and every concern.
Now the challenge here is that with so many acids on the market, it is hard to know which ones to use, when to use and what to use it for. So, I’m here to give you a crash course in the most common acids. Watch or read on to learn more:
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA):
Is a group of ingredients which include glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric, mandelic and citric acids. These acids are fantastic at exfoliating. They can remove the top layer of dead skin cells. The new skin revealed beneath is smoother, brighter and more radiant. Great for a dry/dehydrated, thickened skin.
Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA or Salicylic Acid):
This acid can penetrate the pore lining and exfoliate inside the pore as well as on the surface. Salicylic acid has shown to be extremely effective for reducing breakouts, congestion, blackheads, and whiteheads.
Hyaluronic acid :
Is a moisture-binding ingredient that helps keep skin hydrated and plump. It is a substance that the body naturally produces. Unfortunately, as we age and less is produced which is why many anti-aging products contain Hyaluronic Acid. All skin types especially mature/dry skin benefit greatly from Hyaluronic acid.
It is another name for pure Vitamin C, an ingredient that occurs naturally in our skin and found in many foods (think oranges). Powerful antioxidant protection brightens the skin and stimulates collagen.
Is a form of Vitamin A, is a hero ingredient. It Stimulates collagen and cell turn over. Great for all skin types concerned with aging, sun damage, pigmentation, and acne.
A favourite all-rounder is Societe Refinishing Complex. A skin treatment formula designed to aid in the retexturizing of skin. Societe Refinishing Complex with PRT is a Vitamin A together with AHA/BHA in a night treatment serum. Suitable for Normal Skin, Signs of Aging, Uneven Skin Tone / Hyperpigmentation
Before you take the acid plunge it’s important to know that while acids can be really effective, there are some acids that are not suitable for certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Before embarking on a new skincare routine that incorporates acids, it's always a good idea to check with your skin professional and/or doctor.
