This question comes up a lot. When clients ask me about how they can lighten their skin I will always make clear that the goal of skin lightening is not to bleach the skin, but to fade and inhibit melanin.
Skin lightening will reduce pigmentation, minimise decolourisation and improve skin clarity. You have a few options in skin care products and skin treatments, but to be clear there currently isn't safe/approved treatments to lighten the overall skin colour in Australia.
I recommend you look for products containing effective skin lightening ingredients like Kojic acid, Glycolic acid, Alpha hydroxy acid, Vitamin C, Zinc, antioxidants and Arbutin. These products are considered safe to use as long as you follow the manufacturer's directions or from a qualified skin therapist.
A great product with these ingredients is Medik8 White Balance Every day Protect.
White Balance Everyday Protect contains multiple clinically proven actives to boost its brightening power while minimising the signs of ageing. This ultra-sheer formula instantly hydrates and brightens skin using light-reflecting pigments, while the brightening actives break down stubborn pigmentation. The lightweight formula absorbs quickly, without leaving you with that greasy feeling, resulting in smoother and brighter looking skin. This day cream is the perfect way to start your morning.
Societe have a fab Retinol product called Refinishing Complex. It is designed to aid in the retexturising of the skin through the benefits of Retinol and Alpha Hydroxy acids. It also contains pigment regulating technology. As with all retinol based products it is best applied at night.
Outside of at-home products, a course of peels is great option to supercharge a change in the skin. Peels can be very effective in brightening the skin and evening the skin tone. With a chemical peel, an acidic substance such as Alpha hydroxy acid or glycolic acid is applied to the skin and left on for 5 to 10 minutes. When removed the skin is visibly lighter and brighter. If you live in Sydney, talk to us about our treatment peels at our skin centre in Warriewood.
If your skin is sensitive to acid peels and creams, a Microdermabrasion treatment can be the better avenue to go down. It essentially exfoliates and polishes the skin, removing dull layers and leaves your skin feeling smoother and brighter.
With any of these treatments it’s important to avoid the sun and always apply a sunscreen as your skin maybe extra sensitive.
