When you have sensitive skin, the smallest of things can irate it. For those with sensitive skin, potential triggers are things like the food you eat, the products you use, extreme temperatures, alcohol, pollution, UV light/sunlight, and aggressive skin treatments.
I have treated many people who have sensitive skin and my advice is that understanding your skin type is important when determining the best skincare routine for you. As with most things, there isn’t a one size fits all.
Here are my tips to help protect, calm, repair a compromised barrier, and soothe sensitive skin to give it that healthy radiant glow.
Start your routine with a gentle cleanser and don’t over-cleanse your skin. Look for ingredients that will calm, soothe and leave your skin feeling hydrated. Avoid using hot or cold water when removing as this will only irritate the skin - lukewarm water is best.
One product that I recommend is Cosmedix Benefit Clean. It has Sandalwood which has anti-inflammatory properties that may calm and soothe your skin. It also contains herbal Amarach which encourages hydration, making sure your skin doesn’t feel tight and dry.
For sensitive skin, I recommend looking for moisturisers that will restore your skins moisture barrier and contain calming and soothing ingredients. A suitable moisturizer will renew the skins outer layer and prevent water loss and protect against potential irritants on your skin. Look for ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, aloe vera as well as hyaluronic acid which will increase hydration and lock in moisture.
A great one is Dermalogica's Calm Water gel, which contains dual hyaluronic acid technology, apple, and cactus pear extracts and aloe vera. This soothing gel works on skin surface layers to increase and lock in moisture, soothe sensitivity and make your skin appear more youthful and healthy
Now that you have the essentials, I would like to introduce some extras that will help treat your sensitive skin.
Sensitive skin can be exfoliated but very GENTLY. I recommend limiting your exfoliation to once or twice a week. It will help remove dead skin cells leaving your skin feeling soft and smooth. The important thing to remember here is not to overdo it. Avoid harsh scrubs and instead, go for gentle exfoliants like Dermalogicas Daily Microfoliant
They can help provide comfort, alleviate dryness, redness and strengthen the skin to create a barrier against outside irritants.
One that gives fantastic results is Dermalogicas new Redness Relief Essence. Lightweight like a toner but concentrated like a serum.
