Why you need to start using anti ageing products in your 20’s

We are all guilty of taking beautiful, youthful skin for granted. Gone are the days of raging hormones and the dreaded surprise zit always popping up at the worst possible moment. And of course, the idea of crows feet and frown lines seem a distant future. The late-night coffee and sugar indulgences, cocktails and all that sun-baking probably haven’t caught up with you… yet – at least not in a way that a bit of concealer can’t fix. However, it is these formative years that preventative care and early treatment can be most effective in maintaining that precious youthful glow.

Between the ages of 18-20 years, our fibroblast re-division ceases. Fibroblasts are responsible for producing the three proteins in the dermis, which are Collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic acid. Fibroblasts redivide and create new fibroblasts to keep on top of their production requirements. The number of fibroblast cells you have remaining in your 20’s are solely responsible for producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid going forward. Yikes!!

Due to fibroblast re-division ceasing in your 18-20’s, from the age of 20 onwards, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production levels decline by 2% each year!!!

So why not start even earlier and give yourself a head start?

There’s such a thing called starting “too” early, particularly when it comes to the hard stuff (retinol and chemical peels). Between the ages of 18 and 25, your skin is getting over those awkward teenage years when acne and pimples are the primary concern, so you need to be careful when using high strength ingredients, as your skin is still highly sensitive. If you are under 25 something you need to be using every single day is SPF 30+. Rain or shine, this is the best preventative measure against ageing that you can take. UV radiation, especially UVA, which is called the silent killer to ageing skins. This damage results in accelerated collagen and elastin breakdown, adequate daily protection is a MUST

It is never too early or too late to start with your collagen precursors, anti-ageing precautions. The age of 30 is where we will start seeing the signs of premature ageing on your face. Many skins are deficient in the collagen precursors, which can further impact the fibroblasts ability to keep the skin looking youthful. Remember, prevention is the key!!

So, if you’re ready to take the plunge and start your collagen precursors - Vitamin C, A, B, hyaluronic acid and peptides – these are the ingredients to source. Plus our recommendations to get you started.

Retinol (Vitamin A)

Retinol should be introduced slowly into your skin routine in low quantities. Once your skin is accustomed to vitamin A increase in frequency, you can not be allergic to vitamin A but can receive a retinoid response if your skin is taking the ingredient on too quickly or too soon, means drop back. Vitamin A is a remarkable ingredient for all skin types from oily skin, helps combat adult acne and sun damage while increasing cellular turnover, which boosts collagen.
