Our Top 8 Tips to Ban the Winter Skin Dullness

Do you feel like your skin gets worse during the winter months? Don't worry, you're not alone.

Our skin can seem worse during winter for many reasons.

The rapidly changing temperatures from hot to cold or rainy days to extreme winds can fastly affect our skin's moisture barrier function, making it harder for our skin to maintain hydration and be able to protect itself.

This moisture barrier impairment can also lead to inflammation within the skin, redness, irritation and dullness.

Although your skin type cannot change whether it's summer or winter (because it is primarily determined genetically), our skin can experience different skin concerns that change from season to season

Here are my top tips for surviving this winter skin blues:

1. Hydration

Hydration is a crucial factor to help all skin types cope during winter - and yes, even if your skin type is oily, you still need to moisturise, as winter can dehydrate oily skins too!

Your acid mantle, which is the protective layer of your skin, is made up of oil and water. To avoid dehydration through winter, introduce hyaluronic acid and fat lipids to your skin regime.

Adding in hyaluronic acid will prevent trans epidermal water loss (water escaping from the skin cells). And Omega Complex (especially in extremely dry/dehydrated skins) will nourish, hydrate and protect the skin.

2. Changing Cleansers

Changing your cleanser through winter to help nourish the skin can be an important step. We tend to feel more dehydrated or irritated through the harsh winter months, so it's a good idea to change your cleanser to suit your skin better.

3. Be gentle on the exfoliation

Everyone loves to exfoliate their skin, but you might end up overexfoliating in winter, which can lead to skin concerns such dehydration or sensitivity.

You may want to change the exfoliant you use during winter. Changing from a deeper chemical exfoliation like AHA or BHA to a more gentle exfoliation like a light enzymatic exfoliant could be the answer here.

Exfoliation will help to regenerate new cells, guarantee a deeper absorption of your hydration serums and give you radiant skin for winter - as long as it is gentle and suited for the harsh temperatures of this time of the year.

5. Adequate water intake

When the colder months arrive, it is hard to keep the adequate water intake up. However, not having enough water can affect how our skin copes and feels through winter. An extra tip is to opt for natural teas with ginger to keep you hydrated.

6. Essential Fatty Acids

Taking a supplement of Omega 3 is important for skin health and protection. Supplementing your skin health with essential fatty acids will support cell membrane development and hence acid mantle creation and maintenance. This is an important step in treating dehydrated skin!

7. Get enough sleep

I cannot stress enough how important your sleep is. A healthy mind, body and skin must get a sufficient amount of sleep.

It is recommended for adults to sleep between 7-9hrs. During our sleep, many major functions work to repair, regenerate and recover physically and mentally, support our brain function, aid in body metabolism, and lowers stress levels.

But besides all the benefits for your overall health and wellbeing, sleeping well and having enough sleep is also crucial in how healthy our skin feels and looks, as its regenerative process happens at night!
